The Lee Cricket Club 1st XI v Pinkneys Green 2nd XI on Sat 03 May 2014 at 13:00
The Lee Cricket Club Won

Match report New League, new rules and a new result - WE WON! 100 overs in the day is rather a lot, and when the opposition bowl at 10 per hour it can be a little frustrating - we predicted a finish time of 11 pm after the first hour. In difficult batting conditions, and the prospect of falling asleep at the wicket we kept the score board ticking over, but at 64 for 5 off 17 overs, we were having a bit of a wobble. However, a slow over rate and a bit of chat in the field is exactly what I like and Jamie Line and I managed to almost double the score in the next ten overs. At 141 for 7 off 30, we were teetering again, but Ed Boakes coaxed the last three along superbly and we finished on 224 all out.

A great big thanks must go to our 12th man, Mr. Extras who put on 49 truly magnificent runs.

When we began fielding at 5.15 pm!!! We all started to feel like we had done something heinous in a previous life. Not only did the openers not have any desire to go for the target, but they spent an interminable amount of time checking and rechecking their guards, which by my reckoning added at least 45 minutes to the game. At drinks, with the score at 54 for 0 off 24 overs, their captain actually had the audacity to question our score, stating the our batting added up to 224 but their bowling on 222. I did ask him if this was really relevant as they had no intention of going for it - he seemed a little offended for which I can't think why.
After drinks the game really changed, we had all put jumpers on as it gets quite chilly at night in May. Also, watching the erosion of the soil to form the Grand Canyon at both ends had lost it's appeal. Even Colin, the umpire refused to acknowledge the question as he could see the crater from his end.
Mike Lapham got a wicket in over 29, but it wasn't until Jake Hutt came back on that things really started to happen. With one end now unable to block, his next 7 overs produced 8 for 16 and the oppo were desperate to block out the last over. Along came Fraser Perceval, young, pacey and a little wayward - he bowled 5 balls near the batsman and then a wide. It's often said that the extra ball makes a difference, and in this case they're certainly right - fast, straight and to the point - stumps all over the place and a well deserved win in our first game in the new league.
Obviously, Extras was man of the match for his magnificent display without a bat. well done one and all, and if the oppo were a little miffed at our perceived sledging (exc. Sparky) then I do apologise, but we had to do something to keep ourselves amused during their turgid batting performance.
