Match report NO FINER TRIBUTE:
A VILLAGE CRICKET MATCH 100 YEARS AFTER THE GREAT WAR
The most important cricket match to be played at the Manor Park for 100 years took place on 10th August 2014. A century previously, on August Bank Holiday Monday, The Lee played the Manor House XI, the former representing the village, the latter friends and relatives of the Libertys, invited for a week of ‘high jinks’. It was a match that was never completed; on that day after rain had washed out play, war was declared, and the players agreed to complete it after the anticipated swift end to hostilities. Four years and three months later, the world was a very different place, and the XIs would be depleted by the tragedy of death and injury. Present day club members at The Lee learned of the unfinished match from Mike Senior’s superb book ‘No Finer Courage’ , on the village in wartime, and decided to re-play the match as a memorial to the men and their families, now long-dead, but never forgotten. There was a wonderful juxtaposition between the two matches; the first started in good weather, but was rained off. The re-match began in atrocious conditions, (courtesy of the remnants of Hurricane Bertha) and concluded under a clear blue sky. Further mirroring could be found in the make-up of the teams; this Manor House team was comprised of villagers, whilst The Lee’s XI was represented by those who live outside the village, but play for the club. Another contrast; the Manor House team batted first this time, and overtook the 122 scored by The Lee in 1914, setting a final target of 181. 100 years ago, the Manor House had reached 46-3 in pursuit of 122 when the heavens opened, and the lamps went out all over Europe. Before the cricket began, at 11:00 we held a minute’s silence, reflecting on what had gone before, joined by cadets from the Aylesbury Marines. Just before 14:00, part-way through the Manor House innings, huge black clouds raced in from the south-west, there was a resounding clap of thunder to hint at the bombardment our predecessors had endured in battle, and an extraordinary hailstorm pelted us with a fearful intensity. It all seemed remarkably appropriate. As we took shelter, we were able to study an excellent display from the Bucks Military Museum Trust and enjoyed a wonderful early tea (which included ‘Trench Cake’ made from a 1916 receipe by the resourceful Trish, renowned baker). After this came the really emotional part of the day. Liz Stewart-Liberty, the Club President, read excellent and moving poetry she had composed especially for the day. She was followed by the eloquence of Mike Senior, who succinctly summarised the background, the awful reality of the events during WW1, and the legacy for the village with its depleted population. Matt Line, Club Chairman, spoke with equal emotion of the sad reality that there were thousands of villages all over the British Isles (and communities worldwide) affected in just the same way. And then the roll call of the 30 men who had died, many of them at Fromelles, in the same few minutes on July 19th 1916. Bridging the century or so that has passed, the home address of each, and the date of their death was, included. We concluded with Pat Walsh, Vice-Chairman, reading Lawrence Binyon’s famous 3 verses, and we then stood for the Last Post, a further minute’s silence and the Reveille (both played by Bill Houghton). We did, we do, and we will remember them, always.
Back on to the field of play; this time the weather improved, the match was completed, and in a thrilling finish, the Manor House team won by 11 runs in a glorious summer evening. The real winner was the village, demonstrating all those qualities that have served it so well down the centuries. A large crowd had gathered through the game, and it was our tribute to those gallant men, and their families and friends, whose lives were so affected then. They would be pleased to see that their sacrifices were not forgotten, that teenagers read out their names, were able to play in teams alongside their fathers, and that the spirit of fair play can never be extinguished.
A Grateful Participant - J Swain.
