Gerrards Cross v The Lee Cricket Club U13 XI on Tue 06 May 2014 at 18:00
The Lee Cricket Club Lost on run rate
Match report
The Lee batted first and came up against some fierce bowling from the first pair, Felix and Ben losing their wickets in the first few overs. Jack came in and defended resolutely, allowing Robert to play some lovely shots, including 5 boundaries, before having to retire on an excellent 31 not out. Jack and then Matt both fell just short of double figures to some cunning leg spin. In came Ollie for his cricketing debut and leathered 2 boundaries as if he was swatting flies. Sadly he then just missed a straight one and was on his way back for those 8 runs. Freddie, John and Jake saw out the innings and we reached 74 for 7 from the 20 overs.
The Gerrards Cross didn’t waste much time getting going. Matt trapped one of the openers LBW in the second over but the score was already up to 31 after 4 overs. Their No.3 hit 13 runs off his first 4 balls but Jack then nailed him, caught and bowled, and followed that with another wicket in his next over, this time beautifully caught by John at Square Leg. A sharp run-out, also by Jack, and the other opener finally retiring on a very good 31 not out, gave us hope that we might still be able to win the game. But the heavens then opened so heavily the game had to be stopped with Gerrards Cross 60 for 5 off 10 overs, the minimum number required to call it a result. They won fair and square on superior run rate.
A real shame the weather ended the match early but it wasn’t a bad start to the season, featuring a tremendous knock by Robert and some tenacious all-round cricket from Jack.
