Great Kingshill v The Lee Cricket Club U13 XI on Mon 09 Jun 2014 at 18:00
The Lee Cricket Club Lost by 13 runs
Match report
This fixture had been cancelled twice due to rain and it was forecast to rain again, but both sides were determined to play come rain (steady drizzle) or shine (not much of that).
Great Kingshill batted first. Ollie held a great catch off Matt third ball. Then Felix bowled the other opener in the 4th over. Looking promising. The next wicket was a long time coming though, Jack taking a smart catch off Sam in the 11th over. Their no.3 was hitting well and retired on 31 not out and the score had been pushed along to 90 for 4 after 14 overs. The bowlers then did really well to concede only 6 more runs from the last 6 overs, including a wicket-maiden for Zach, 2 excellent run-outs by Felix and Jack, a maiden for Rob and two for Matt. The target was set at 96 for 7.
When our boys went in to bat it had had turned really gloomy - their opening bowlers had pace and the ball was difficult to see properly. Ben and Felix were unlucky to be bowled, then Rob was hit and had to retire hurt. The conditions were so tricky we had only scored 13 off the first 7 overs. Jack held down one end while Ollie started hitting out, but just as they looked settled both wickets went down. Zach and Matt ran well between the wickets but both succumbed to straight balls in the fading light. Sam entertained with slashes punctuated by uncharacteristic blocks but fell by the sword, caught off a big hit. Rob recovered enough to come back in and played some nice shots, aided by Freddie then Jake, but the outfield had turned very slow and boundaries were hard to come by.
In the end we fell 13 runs short on 83 for 8. The light didn’t help but, to be fair, Great Kingshill probably just outplayed us in most departments.
