Penn Street CC v The Lee Cricket Club Sun XI on Sun 09 Jun 2019 at 13:00
The Lee Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Back to winning ways for the Sunday team. A visit to the delightful setting of Penn Street and adjacent Squirrel pub with a changed team (Rob Walsh and Ben Harris demoted to the Misfits) gave others an excellent opportunity to press their credentials. The skipper having misplaced his skill at the toss meant that Penn Street took 1st innings. A brisk start from their openers was slowed by a clever piece of fielding by veteran Guy Morgan. In letting Russell (75) off the hook from the unlucky Phil Wideson, Guy palmed the ball to Mike Harris who gathered it well, and fired the ball into Jules Swain, who whipped the bails off for a run out of the other opener. Undeterred, Russell continued to tuck into some variable offerings, and at one stage it looked as though we would be chasing something considerably north of 240. However, the dashing Russell was cut off by the introduction of Jon Swain, who persuaded him to hoist the ball high to long-on, where York Woodford-Smith took a really good catch. That led to a tightening grip on the scoring, and an excellent spell from Harry Rice (3-36), backed up by Guy Morgan (1-7) and another good spell of leg spin from Sam Harris (1-8). 2 excellent stumpings from Jules Swain supported them.
The Lee's reply was solid, if a little pedestrian, 20 coming off the 1st 10 overs. However, the value of a sound base was seen later, as Mike Harris with a patient 61, and Iain Ward with a studious 7 blunted the opening attack. When Iain left, Jules Swain injected some timely acceleration with a swift 24, before falling to a catch in the deep. Stephen Gardner then applied his skill to score a solid 36. The fall of the 3rd wicket brought in Jon Swain, who found form with 31* from 15 balls, watching with some anxiety as Gardner and Pat Walsh departed in successive balls, the latter to one that reared up. Harry Rice saw out the rest of the over, and the runs were polished off with some haste, with 3 overs and 5 wickets to spare. In the end a comfortable victory, and a great team effort, with everyone contributing to the cause. After the game, Jules Swain introduced a very amusing fine system; and we all had a laugh at the indiscriminate allocation of misdemeanours. It was wonderful to see Peter Neal, who was visiting from New Zealand, and clearly wanted some quality entertainment to remind him of his days playing for the 'Manor Park Marauders.'
