The Lee Cricket Club U11 X v Marlow Town on Thu 14 Jun 2012 at 18:00
The Lee Cricket Club Lost by 7 runs

Match report Our fourth league game of the season was played on a cold and somewhat damp evening. With heavy rain forecast the umpire agreed up front to reduce the match to 15 overs a side.

Having been soundly beaten by the same team in the Cup just a few weeks earlier, The Lee team approached this game with a little trepidation… but that was soon forgotten when the match started, and it turned into a real close game.

Marlow won the toss and elected to bat first. Zach and Robert opened the bowling, and Robert clean bowled one of their openers with his second ball (in a wicket-maiden over). Killian and Matthew put in some tight overs, and Felix bowled a maiden over. Freddie then stepped up, and with his fourth ball took out the off stump of their number 3 batsman. The Marlow batsmen were trying to force the pace by this time, and there were two very near run-out opportunities which were very narrowly missed.

The strangest over of the match came when Abdul took his turn to bowl. In the one over there were five wides and a no-ball – but he also produced two beauties to clean bowl two of their top batsmen – sending the rest of the team wild with jubilation. There was one more wicket, when accurate bowling by Charlie caused a mix up for the batsmen, and Felix was able to run one of them out with a diving underarm throw.

Robert closed the bowling, and took his second wicket by bowling their number 7 batsman. Marlow ended up scoring 54 runs, but the 17 extras pushed their total to a very competitive 71 from their 15 overs.

After a very quick turnaround, Jack and Robert strode into open the batting for The Lee. They successfully saw off the first over, but the Jack was unluckily caught in the second over, and Zach came in at number three.

Zach and Robert formed an effective partnership, with Robert getting a total of 12 before being caught in the deep going for a big drive to the boundary. Zach was in excellent form, and at one stage hit three boundaries in one over. Unfortunately he just missed getting to the magical 30 run point (at which he would have had to retire), when he shuffled across his stumps and was plum lbw.
Sam and Felix were the last pair, and managed to knock off quite a few singles, but just couldn’t get the boundaries they needed, and at the end of the 15 overs they were agonisingly 7 runs short – the Lee ending up on 64 for 4.

So, the scorebook will record it as another defeat, but really doesn’t tell the full story, as there were some great performances today, and an awful lot for the team to be proud of. Zach was definitely man of the match with his beautifully worked innings – well done!
