The Lee Cricket Club U12 XI v Cookham Dean on Wed 22 May 2013 at 18:00
The Lee Cricket Club Lost by 18 runs
Match report
A sunny but bitterly cold evening at HQ for the U12's second game of the season.
Cookham Dean batted first. Some good bowling from Matthew and Robert pegged them back, and Robert took the first wicket in the fourth over. Felix and Zach took over and kept the scoring low. Their No3 then started hitting a few boundaries. Kilian clean-bowled his partner and the score after 13 overs was 70 for 2. Wouldn't you just know that Cookham had been keeping their biggest hitter at No5, though - he retired on 30 off just 7 scoring shots. The No3 decided to join the run-fest and also retired on 30. Robert pitched in with an excellent direct-hit run-out but after 20 overs the score had reached 141 for 3. Quite a target.
Jack and Felix opened the innings. They were looking comfortable but both fell to excellent deliveries. Sam strode in and did what Sam does best - he absolutely leathered a six and belted four more boundaries before falling to a quick one for 24. We then suffered a bit of a middle-order batting collapse, with four wickets falling in 12 balls, and when Matthew joined Robert at the crease the score was an unpromising 57 for 7 after 11 overs. They managed to keep their heads up though and forged an excellent partnership with clean hitting and smart running. It was a shame Matthew had to retire on 32 at the end of the 19th over. We needed 19 off the last over, but lost another wicket pushing for a result. Robert finished with a very good 23 not out, but we fell 18 runs short.
So a second defeat but this ended up being really close. The fielding was much tighter than last game, there was some very good bowling and plenty to be encouraged about on the batting front. Back luck boys, but well played.
