Match report The U12’s second game of the week was another home fixture, this time against Chalfont St Giles. It was a cloudy evening, but despite the constant threat of rain it managed to stay dry for the full game.
Chalfont won the toss and elected to bat first, and Matthew and Robert opened the bowling with a couple of very tight overs each. The boys had all been learning new fielding positions, and sticking to these helped to keep the scores low, with very few opportunities for the batsmen to get runs. The pressure started to get to the batsmen in the third over, when Zach forced a great run out.
Felix and Zach were the next bowling pair, and Chalfont’s number 3 batsman decided to hit out, scoring a six and a couple of fours before being stunningly bowled by Felix. Their other opener was then removed by another great run out from Jack.
In the following overs some tight bowling (including two maidens from Abdul) and some great work in the field led to three more spectacular run outs, with direct hits from Matthew, Robert and Felix. Chalfont ended up with a score of 79 for 5 off their twenty overs. It was the best fielding display the team has ever produced, and they went back to the clubhouse in high spirits for a well deserved drinks break.
Sam and Jack opened The Lee’s innings in reply. Chalfont’s bowling was very quick and accurate, and unfortunately Jack spooned one straight to mid-wicket. Sam successfully blocked out his first ten deliveries, before unleashing a mighty blow for six which nearly landed in the clubhouse. Zach and Matthew and Robert were the middle order batsmen, and all added some well worked singles before being out caught or bowled. Matthew was particularly unlucky to have been out to a very low catch at mid-off.
Felix pulled a couple of great boundaries down to square leg in his innings of 16, and John, Freddie and Abdul all supported him with a few singles.
Jayden and Jacob (both playing their first ever match for the club) were the last pair in. Jacob smacked one great boundary to deep-midwicket, but by this time we needed 24 runs off the last two overs, with no wickets remaining. Jayden successfully defended eight very fast deliveries but was bowled by the ninth, leaving The Lee on 59 all out from 19 overs.
So, sadly another defeat, but a great performance in the field, and lots of positives to take into the next game.
