The Lee Cricket Club U13 XI v Wooburn Narkovians on Sun 25 May 2014 at 10:30
The Lee Cricket Club Won by 4 runs
Match report
Wow. We thought last weekend’s match against Chalfont St Peter was close but this went right down to the wire in even more dramatic fashion. Chasing 87, Wooburn were 76 for 1 in the 12th over but tremendous bowling and fielding had them all out for 83 with 2 balls remaining for a thrilling win.
Sam won the toss and elected to bat. Jack and Felix were well bowled in successive balls in the second over and we were struggling on 5 for 2. Sam joined Rob and they carefully saw out the 3rd over before Sam started smacking boundaries. 10 balls after his first scoring runs he had to retire not out for a really excellent 30. Matt went quickly (caught & bowled) but Ben and Rob pushed the score along nicely until Rob was trapped lbw for an important 19 runs. Our last 5 wickets then tumbled for 10 runs in 4 overs and we were all out for 87 in 15 overs. Some work to do there, boys.
The Wooburn openers played really well together, one retiring not out before a wicket had gone, and our breakthrough didn’t come until the 12th over when Matt bowled their No.3. At this point, Wooburn had 8 overs remaining to score 12 runs with 8 wickets in hand. We tightened up the field and pressed in really hard. A great run out in the next over (a maiden from Ben) was followed by only 3 runs off the next 2. The score was now 79 for 3 off 15. Felix came in to bowl a superb double-wicket maiden, then next over Matt did exactly the same at the other end! Another maiden from Felix included a second run out for man-of-the-match, Sam. 79 for 8 with 2 overs remaining. Jack kept up the pressure with the 9th wicket as 3 runs off the over took them to within 5 wins of victory. All the spectators were on their feet. In came John to bowl the last over. Dot. Dot. Wide. Big hit off the 4th ball…..and wonderfully held by Finn at point!
A fantastic end to a fascinating match. Plenty of things for us to improve on, especially on the batting front, but well done for never giving up and piling on the pressure to the end. And thank you to Felix, Matt and Ben for taking turns to field for the opposition when one of their players had to retire injured – that’s what cricket is all about.
