Chalfont St Giles v The Lee Cricket Club U15 XI (Old) on Mon 16 May 2016 at 18:00
The Lee Cricket Club Lost by 20 runs
Match report
The first competitive game of the season took place an a beautifully clear May evening away at Chalfont St Giles. It was a cup game against tough opponents from the Division above us, and with lots of school friends' rivalries at stake.
The opponents won the toss and elected to bat first. Tom took a great catch at square leg off Matt's full toss... only for it be called as a no ball for height. But the breakthrough came soon after when James pitched one perfectly to clip the top of off stump. Matt then had their other opener plumb lbw in the next over. However, their next two batsmen proved rather more troublesome, and both went on to retire unbeaten on 50.
A few too many wides and byes left a daunting target of 170 for The Lee to chase after the drinks break.
Openers Tom and Felix set about building strong innings, but Felix was unlucky to knock a full toss directly back to the bowler, who took a great catch. Ben came into join Tom, and they started to take apart the strong bowling attack of Chalfont St Giles. Tom scored a magnificent unbeaten fifty, and Ben was unlucky to fall for 44 late on.
In the last five overs we still had 40 more runs to find, and the batsmen who came in had to try and hit out immediately, and inevitably a few wickets fell.
After twenty overs we came up 20 runs short, and so are out of the cup competition - but can reflect on some excellent individual performances and can take a lot of pride from pushing such a strong opposition team so hard.
