The Lee Cricket Club Sun XI v Northdown CC on Sun 25 Aug 2019 at 13:00
The Lee Cricket Club Won by 62 runs

Match report On a remarkable day for England cricket, the second most important match was taking place at... Headingley. At Manor Park, The Lee hosted Northdown, on tour from the Kent coast, visiting for the 3rd time. The hottest August Bank Holiday Sunday on record, and The Lee won the toss, and after agonising for 0.000001 nanoseconds, the skipper decided to bat. Mike Harris got a good ball in the 2nd over, making way for son Ben, who went on to play the innings he's been threatening all season. Eventually out to a superb catch on the boundary, he hit 16 4s, and a 6 in a superb 105. He and Jules Swain put on 129, before Jules, failing for once, was bowled for 71. Sam Harris got a really good delivery and was well-caught by the keeper standing up, and after a short stand of 35, the skipper was out lbw, triggered by his own son... (to be fair it was absolutely plumb). All the while, up-dates from events at Headingley were arriving, and the hopes for England were fading fast. Fortunately this brought in Matt Yeabsley, who produced another stylish and polished innings to score a superb 66* with an array of punishing strokes. All the while, national hero Jack Leach was nursing England towards the distant target with his sidekick Stokes. Those in the pavilion were torn between the heroics at Manor Park, and the low-key stuff up north as tea approached. Ben's fine innings came to an end, and Jim Cook came and went, leaving Matt and Ed to steer us to 287 off our 40 overs. We all watched the denouement in Leeds in a remarkable repeat of the atmosphere from 6 weeks earlier, surrounded by cricketing friends, in a pulsating climax we sympathised with the poor old Aussies, then during images of Stokes, arms flung back and up to the blue skies, roaring in celebration after hitting the winning runs, and the crowd erupting having witnessed the miracle! A thoughtful cameraman focused in on a distraught Aussie in the crowd, doing a Steve Smith impersonation, blubbing in his gold and green. Thanks to Matt and Grace, plus Matt's Nan for a superb tea, which we enjoyed al the more savouring England's famous victory!
Out on the filed, still baking hot, Ed and York opened the bowling. A few catches went to ground, before one of York's favoured 'grenade' lobs did the job and removed Rains as the score approached 50. Green and Hodges then put on almost 100, with The Lees spin twins (Guy and Harry) unable to dislodge them. Jim Cook patrolled the Parkside boundary with his customary speed and athleticism, making a brave effort to get to a catch out of the sun, which must have blinded him on another shot, which trickled over the boundary a few yards away... enter Matt Yeabsley to demonstrate his prowess as an all-rounder, and take 3-35 with some terrific lively seam bowling. Ben Harris took another, and Matt's skills were demonstrated in a direct-hit run out, before 2 in 2 balls from the skipper and 1 for Sam Harris finished the match. We celebrated the events of the day as the sun set creating a glorious tableau as the youngsters played until it got dark and beyond. What a day! We'll all remember it for as long as we live. Cricket is alive and healthy at all levels, and it's a privilege to be able to play this wonderful game with friends and in such sublime surroundings!
