The Lee World war One Memorial match - Thank You

11 Aug 2014

All,

Thank you to everyone who attended our special match yesterday, whether to play or support the teams. We managed to work around the worst that Hurricane Bertha could throw at us (and at one point we were bombarded by hailstones the size of marbles!) and successfully completed a very competitive game, a century on from the original match.

We had excellent speeches from our Life President, Elizabeth Stewart-Liberty, and Vice-President, Mike Senior, and the players reading out the names of the 30 men from the village who died in the war was particularly poignant. The one minute silence was very moving, and the presence of the Royal Marine cadets from Aylesbury, the Bucks Regiment's silverware (courtesy of the Bucks Military Museum Trust) and a photo display explaining the Fromelle battle made it is very thought-provoking event.

The match ended up very close, with Jon Swain's Manor House team eventual victors over Ed Boakes' Cricket Club team by just eleven runs.

There is a great article in the Daily Telepgraph today:  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/news/11024692/Cricket-match-postponed-by-outbreak-of-WWI-is-finally-over.html  and will be a piece in the Bucks Free Press on Friday.

Once again, thanks again to everyone involved in this special day for the club and the village.
