Great Kingshill v The Lee Cricket Club U12 XI on Wed 26 Jun 2013 at 18:00
The Lee Cricket Club Won by 41 runs
Match report
This was our third away game in succession, and we arrived in great run of form after excellent victories last week over Ley Hill and Chesham. This match was played on Great Kingshill’s backup ground, the small but picturesque Widmer End St Mary’s CC.
Captain Sam won the toss and elected to bat first, so Robert and James opened the innings. Great Kingshill had some fine opening bowlers, but both Robert and James settled down well, and hit boundaries in their first overs. James was unlucky to get caught in the third over, but Robert continued to pick off the bad balls and exploited the short boundary on one side of the pitch, and the lightning fast expanse of the square on the other side to hit another four boundaries before playing a bottom edge onto his stumps.
Felix and then Jack came in and pushed some well-taken singles and Jack pulled a couple of boundaries before getting caught. That brought captain Sam to the crease. He started quietly, blocking out three dot balls, before stroking a delicate edge beyond fine leg for four, and then unleashing a fantastic pull shot for a massive 6 beyond the longest bit of the boundary. He continued to get five more boundaries before the obligatory retirement when he passed thirty runs. He left the field to an ovation from his team mates and with a big smile on his face – Sam is back!
Matthew and Zach were the last two batsmen in, and they each scored boundaries and did a great job of pushing quick singles by finding the gaps in the field, particularly on the off-side. They were both not out at the end of 20 overs, and the total score was a very impressive 126 for 4.
Knowing they had a big target to chase down the Great Kingshill openers started quickly out of the blocks, smashing 18 runs off the first three (well bowled) overs from Robert, Matthew and James.. But this soon came to a halt when Felix came in and immediately bowled one of them with his first ball. In the next over Zach then repeated the trick, bowling the other opener with his first ball.
The next wicket was a run out with a brilliant bit of fielding by George, picking up from fine leg and getting a direct hit on the stumps from twenty yards! An excellent ball from Jack took out the middle stump of their dangerous number three batsman, and Freddie bowled a beautiful slower ball to defeat another of their middle order ranks. George was then persuaded to bowl an over… and what an over - he clean bowled two more of their batsmen!
The rest of the bowling was neat and tidy, including overs from Abdul and Jacob, and the fielding was excellent, with everyone sticking to their positions and restricting Great Kingshill from taking too many singles. At the end of their 20 overs, Great Kingshill had managed to reach a total of 85 for 7 , meaning a resounding victory for The Lee by 41 runs.
So a fantastic all round performance both with the bat and the ball for a third successive away win. Sam and George were joint men-of –the-match, but this was a great performance from everyone, with runs scored all the way down the order, accurate bowling and great fielding and wicket-keeping. Well done team!
