Great Kingshill v The Lee Cricket Club Sun XI on Sun 19 May 2019 at 13:30
The Lee Cricket Club Won by 45 runs
Match report
The Sunday XI returned to winning form away at Gt Kingshill. Invited to bat, after a good start from Mark "I'll pull 'em" Channer (40) and Mike 'I kept losing the strike (17 off 45 balls) Harris (17), The Lee suffered a mid-order collapse and slow-down. The ship was steadied by Steve Gardner, with an accomplished 48, and then given impetus by a superb innings from James Cook (24*) reaching 175 from the full 40 overs.
This looked 50 runs short, as Gt Kingshill began briskly, reaching 64-0 off 12 overs, and 98-1 off 17. The wheels then cam off in spectacular fashion, as changes in the bowling bore fruit. Guy Morgan lured another youngster to his demise, but it was the introduction of Steve Gardner (4-7) which turned the match on its head. A double-wicket maiden precipitated collective Hari-Kari from the home batsmen, and the innings subsided to 130 all out. Jim Cook bowled an interesting length, leading to ribald suggestions of a well-known blue tablet to be taken to 'get it up'. One of these long hops ensnared the opposition captain, one of 3 blobs in a crucial passage of play.
It just goes to show that one wicket can turn things very quickly, and a surprisingly easy victory in the end was a satisfying outcome.
Everyone played an important part in the game, and we are in good spirits for the campaign ahead.
