Northchurch v The Lee Cricket Club Sun XI on Sun 21 Jul 2019 at 13:00
The Lee Cricket Club Won by 78 runs

Match report It's always a delight to play at Northchurch; they are a really friendly bunch, the ground is attractive, the pitch excellent, and the sun always seems to shine! We lost the toss, and found ourselves inserted to bat. It looked an inspired move; after 5 overs we were 2-1. Mike Harris back in the hutch, the opening bowlers tying up Jules and Rob Walsh. Then the floodgates opened, and after 10 we had reached 32-1, at 15 69-1, and at 20 125-1. This demonstrated the benefit of not losing early wickets; both Jules and Rob were able to take toll of the support bowling as the fielders flagged. Jules was out in the 27th over for a patient and responsible 72, having put on 175 with Rob Walsh. There was no respite as Stephen Gardner played some terrific shots in a run-a-ball 50, and when Rob retired on 100m Mike Cooper entered the fray and unfurled some of the classiest shots seen all day. We ended on what looked to be a formidable 321-2, which was frustrating for those waiting to go in, but their chance to shine was waiting...
Ed Boakes struck with his 2nd ball to bowl Bennie for the 1st of three primaries in the innings! Harry Hutt, meanwhile, was running in hard, bent on testing Jules' fledgling keeping skills with some absolute corkers, plus a couple down the leg side... we love having Harry with us on a Sunday, there is never a dull moment, as he was to throw himself headlong down the wicket, then repeat the trick fielding in the covers, take an amazing catch off Rob Pickles first ball, and amazingly save a single on the boundary at deep square, when a bullet-like throw ensured no run was taken from a fierce pull shot. All accompanied by barked demands to the fielders to ensure only 1 run from any shot played against him! Trouble with the footholds saw Rob Pickles replace Harry, who simmered gently in the field for a bit. A great spell of bowling from Rob, whose gentle-paced outswing was too hot for the keeper much of the time. York W-S then replaced Ed, and proceeded to break the hearts of 2 batsmen with caught and bowled dismissals off consecutive deliveries. Sadly the hat-trick ball was too good, and forced a defensive shot; what price a trio of ct & bowled? All the while, "Skids" Raklyeft was thumping a very positive 83, ad in combination with Chapman (proving his worth with a 2nd 50 vs The Lee this season), the runs flowed. Phil Wideson was still overcome with emotion after witnessing the England triumph at Lords, and found it difficult to decide where to bowl for the best. However, he got the formula right to dismiss Rakyleft via good catch from Mike Cooper. Harry H was persuaded to return to the troublesome end for his feet, but overcame the hurdle in fine fashion, dismissing Chapman and Johnson with superb quick, straight balls. It just left the rampaging Aussie to come on and clean up with 2 in 2 balls. A special mention for rarity; Mike Harris let loose for 2 overs. His main ploy was to bowl so wide the batsmen couldn't reach it. He claimed it was "turning too much". Yeah, right Mike. Ed delivered the best line on it, with "Come on Sam". And in truth, the similarity was uncanny, albeit Sam by far the superior bowler (and developing batsman...). So a comfortable win in the end, and we relaxed with some cold beers to reflect on how good life is; mid-summer, warm weather, and a fun game with great spirit on all sides. The juggernaut rolls on to Tring in stage 2 of our tour of Herts... what will next week bring?
