Chairman's XI v The Lee Cricket Club Sun XI on Sun 11 Aug 2019 at 13:00
The Lee Cricket Club Won By 90 runs

Match report After cataclysmic rains on Friday 9th August, and gale-force winds the next day, we wondered if the annual highlight of our season, the match versus the Chairman’s XI, would be on. The new covers proved their worth again, albeit some water, unsurprisingly, crept underneath, but not enough to prevent a successfully tossing captain claiming 1st use. We started in threatening weather, but on time. Initially the most threatening aspect of the attack was Jules Swain’s running… He sawed-off poor Mike Cooper in the 1st over, and then tested the turning abilities of Nic Hanekom, whose nerves were shot to pieces by some of the calls for runs… Fortunately Jules settled down, and went on to play another telling innings (117 retired*). After Nic got a good ‘un from Harry Hutt, allowing the Chairman to show what a fine pair of mitts he has, Matt Yeabsley showed his classy skills in a partnership of over 150 with Jules. Immediately after Jules’ retired, Matt assumed the iffy running duties and managed to run himself out via a superb direct hit from the mercurial Harry Hutt, primped up by treatment at a Spa the previous day. The remainder of the batting took us up to 300, which we felt was about par.
We then enjoyed a great tea prepared by Trish Swain, plus cakes from Dan Boakes and Clare Walsh. It was at this point, the rains returned. The Chairman’s XI, keen on preserving the wicket, rolled out the covers. Operator deficiencies meant that the flaps covering the joints were not employed (“we didn’t think it was going to rain that much…”), nor the hoses, so the repeat of the Biblical rains from Friday simply gushed out of the gutters alongside the wicket, and 2 interesting wet lines under the joints appeared, offering targets for the bowlers.
The Chair bravely opened the batting with Aussie replacement James Hamilton. We countered with a cunning plan to use the old ball whilst it was wet, and Yorkie and Jim’s wily variations. These bamboozled the batsmen and the Chair and James fell to smart catches at gully and slip respectively. Jim’s cup raneth over when Henry King lobbed a simple catch for his 3rd wicket. That, plus Will Young adopting the Jules’ running method of ‘giving your partner no hope’, left the Chair’s XI reeling at 35-4 after 8 overs. A minor recovery was developing between Will and Rob Walsh, but Guy Morgan struck to remove Rob and Harry Hutt. After 16 overs the score was 92-7! Having dropped Will on 0, the captain attempted to make amends by introducing the quick men, hoping for a swift end to the match. Will had other ideas, and adopting a very attacking approach, launched a blistering assault. The taking off the new ball (having started with the old one whilst it was still soaking wet) only led to an acceleration in the scoring. Will sped to 50, and then carried on his attack. Shots all around the wicket, another fluffed chance by the captain, and Will brought up his maiden century with a flick to square leg for 4. A great performance, and an effortless 6, way, way into the Park, had The Lee wondering if Will could pull off a miracle. Sadly it couldn’t last and Mike Cooper showed he is a fine all-rounder by getting Will to miscue a catch to be last man out.
As we celebrated a fine match, the rains returned to emphasise how lucky we were to get the complete game in. A great afternoon, and a worthy successor to the building tradition of the Chairman’s XI versus the Sunday XI.
