The Lee Cricket Club Sun XI v Boxmoor Cricket Club on Sun 15 Sep 2019 at 13:00
The Lee Cricket Club Won By 17 Runs
Match report
The 22nd match of the season, a season in which not a single Sunday match was lost to the weather! I can never recall that happening; even last year we had at least one rained off. Our record has been marvellous; so far 21 played and 18 won. The weather was great and on a lovely warm afternoon, The Lee won the toss and decided to bat first. This was the return match against our friends from Boxmoor, who had beaten us in the corresponding away fixture earlier. Modesty precludes the captain from pointing out that he was absent on that occasion... We opened with Jules and James, and found that it was one of those days when batsmen got a start, but couldn't capitalise... Jules' marvellous season saw him end up 1 run short of 1200 runs. The first 8 batsmen got into double figures, but the top score was only 26. The star was Sam Harris, who scored 25 precious runs. This was a fine end to a really promising season for Sam, who looked very much at ease in adult cricket, with excellent fielding and and determined batting. He will continue to improve, and Mike and Ben will be looking over their shoulders. The question was whether 186 would be enough runs.
Trish Swain served up the last tea of the summer, and maintained her usual excellent standard. I pause to thank everyone who has produced wonderful teas for the Sunday games; visitors always rave about them. We are all extremely grateful.
As Boxmoor began their response, we had the extraordinary events of both Harry Hutt and Ed Boakes striking with their respective first balls. Visiting skipper Steve Alderton rescued his team from the edge of the abyss with an excellent 49, in partnership with Hampton (32) and then Malhotra with a hard-hitting 51 (dropped by the skipper in his last game in charge) and the game was afoot! It looked at one stage as if Boxmoor would seize victory from the jaws of defeat, and The Lee defeat from the jaws of victory... sterling work in the filed, and by all the bowlers meant that in a pulsating finish, The Lee edged home by just 17 runs; our closest finish of the season I think. Ed Boakes 4-33, and Jon Swain 4-30 grabbed the wickets, but this was a team effort, with everyone involved in the game.
Socialising over a glass or two afterwards, we all agreed it had been splendid season, that we are lucky to be able to play in such sublime surroundings, and amongst such good friends. As the sun set and the youngsters played until it was dark, we all concurred in thinking that life doesn't get much better.
My truly grateful thanks to all who have played in the Sunday XI, and made my life as captain an easy one. I tried my best to ensure everyone played an important part in the games they played, and I would like to think we were a very happy team. 19 wins from 22 played shows we were statistically successful, but the true measure was how contented we all were. I hope that I am right in suggesting: completely contented. See you in the nets and I wish my successor as good a time as I have had.
