Match report
Many of us have grown up with nostalgic images of the Flying Scotsman, a wonderful relic from a bygone age. Less is known about the Flying Welshman, a wonderful relic from a bygone age.
Talking of relics, after the customary loss of the toss, Mike and Ron opened and puffed and chugged there way to a decent stand of 82 before both hit the buffers. Sam (non-relic) and Jon (relic) came and went in a flurry of boundaries before Fraser and Tor started to put together a nice little stand and after 24 overs we were at 143. But after that, the regulators were fully open on the Stockdale express and Tor made the most magnificent century with 15 x 4 and 5 x 6. Truly brutal even by Beeching's standards. Wisely he then calculated the considerable beverage related costs of his ton and played around the next one. At the other end, Fraser had batted patiently and continually generously passed the strike to Tor, but on 49no could he get his half century with 2 balls left? Guy on strike nurdled one away, and Fraser had a ball to get it, but it wasn't to be. Well played anyway.
Ed opened the bowling, and took the first wicket when a leading edge went high. Wisely, he decided that he wasn't going to trust any of us, and took his own catch. And then the flying Welshman. Always a good fielder off his own bowling, when the ball was smashed to his left Guy took off, horizontal in the air, arm outstretched, defying gravity to take a wonderful catch. And an over later they tried again smashing it to his right. Again salmon like he flew through the air, this one destined not to stick, but a wonderful effort. At the other end, Robin bowled a fine spell, gaining turn with a teasing length, to take 4 great wickets, the highlight of which was to dismiss Phoenix's centurion caught at slip.
And so the 2's train steams successfully towards it's next stop at Holyport on Saturday.
