The Lee Cricket Club U15 XI (Old) v Denham on Tue 19 Jul 2016 at 18:00
The Lee Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report This fixture had been twice postponed by weather in June, and was finally played on the hottest day of the year so far, and on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles in the Somme, where eleven brave men from The Lee lost their lives and many more were injured. To remember their forebears, the 11 boys from The Lee all wore black armbands for this match.

Denham won the toss and elected to bat first. The very first ball was a beautiful cutter from Matt whaich caused their opener to play on, so they were immediately one wicket down. Matt then followed this up with another clean bowled, and then Abdul forced a fine run out in Matt's final over, and then bowled one of his own. Denham's middle order batted hard though, and we gave them a few too many byes, enabling them to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Ben took a wicket in his first over, and then some tidy death bowling from Ben, Rob and James A meant Denham set The Lee a tough target of 116 to win.

Tom and Felix opened the batting for The Lee, and both batted steadily and solidly, punishing the bad balls and not giving away any chances. They notched up a fine 50 opening partnership in the 11th over, with each of the them striking half a dozen four's and Felix sweeping a fine six into the scoreboard. They both eventually fell to catches (Felix for 41 and Tom for 31), though it took a very brave one to get Tom out. At this point we had plenty of wickets in hand, but the required rate was creeping up beyond 8 an over. Ben got caught out when he skied one up for the keeper to pouch, but then Rob steadied the ship, with 11 runs from 12 deliveries, whilst Sam and Ollie smashed it around from the other end. Sam hit a quickfire 16, including an enormous six that sailed over the top of the clubhouse. Eight more runs were required from the last over - no problem for Ollie as he blasted two successive fours to win the match with three balls to spare!

What a fantastic contest, played in fine spirit by both teams. Denham haven't won a game all season, but put on a great display and fell just short when they couldn't stop our big guns at the end.

A great result, and a fine tribute to the men from the village who died one hundred years ago.
