The Lee Cricket Club Sun XI v Paddington CC on Sun 16 Jun 2019 at 13:00
The Lee Cricket Club Won By 8 wickets
Match report
It was a special game on Fathers' Day; 3 sets of father/son(s) combinations played in this match. The sons made their respective fathers extremely proud. After cataclysmic rains throughout the preceding week, the value of our wonderful new covers was apparent, as we were able to play on a dry pitch once the rest of the square had dried in a stiff breeze and sunshine. Paddington won the toss and inserted The Lee into the field... Missing some regular bowlers meant that Ben Harris and Alex Morgan were pressed into service as opening bowlers, and did really well. Some enterprising shots saw a good start by the visitors, who raised a 100 before Sparky Channer trapped Wasi Ali lbw with a full, straight delivery. Alex "Mr. Kipling" Morgan saw a juicy Strawberry Cake launched to deep backward square off Guy's bowling, and sniffing a snack, made tremendous progress towards the morsel, plucking it inches from the turf, before throwing it away when he realised it was just a cricket ball. One of the very best catches your correspondent has seen in 50 years playing; absolutely breathtaking. More great out cricket was to follow; Ben Harris achieving a direct hit from the Park boundary at the bottom of the ground to achieve a sensational run-out. This brought together Dinash Usmani and Sadiq Ali, who struck the ball powerfully, and a long way, especially when The Lee bowlers erred in length. The captain bowled an extraordinary spell, 1 of his first 2 overs being a maiden, before ending with 4 overs for 46 runs... Undaunted, the team rallied to restrict the visitors to 287-5; the pick of the bowlers the wily old fox Guy Morgan, relishing Fathers' Day, and taking 2-17 off 5 overs. We broke off for an excellent repast; courtesy of Harry Rice. As in the field, a few pies were on offer, and duly despatched. The big run-chase meant that we had to begin with youth, and they did their team proud. Alex Morgan and Jules Swain gave a masterclass in dealing with good bowling to a well-set field, whilst still keeping the scoreboard ticking over at 5+ per over. At the halfway stage we were 125 without loss. Jules left 1st for a well-compiled 63. There was no respite for the bowlers though, as the ever-improving Ben Harris proceeded to launch the bowling to all parts. 3 consecutive 6s, culminating in one into Manor Hey's closely-guarded compound, were the highlight of a quick-fire 50 from Ben at just the right time. His dismissal (59 from 28 balls) saw Mike Harris replace him, who continued the good work. staying with Alex Morgan (125*) to see us home with 2 overs to spare, for the loss of only 2 wickets. We ended in glorious sunshine, which had seemed so unlikely when we began. A wonderful team effort, with the sons starring.
