The Lee Cricket Club Sun XI v Ballinger on Sun 30 Jun 2019 at 13:30
The Lee Cricket Club Won by 156 runs
Match report
Mid-summer and a crucial fixture; the "Auld Enemy', Ballinger! In this match they were more the 'Young Enemy', featuring a number of promising players, as we shall see... Our once-promising, now fast-maturing, young Turks put them to the sword after a helpful win of the toss meant that The Lee had first use of a good pitch. After putting on 101 in 13 overs with Jules Swain for the first wicket, Mike 'Fingers' Harris was bamboozled by James Conway, with a beautifully flighted legbreak. Alas for Ballinger, this brought together Jules and Alex Morgan, who proceeded to plunder a very promising array of bowlers for a splendid partnership of 116, only ended when Jules retired hurt with a mystery ache in his shoulder, having hit a fairly brutal 151*, demonstrating excellent shot selection, and no little power. The relief on the Ballinger faces was noticeable, and increased by the appearance of Jon Swain to replace Jules. However, the optimism was mis-placed, and the runs flowed in a 3rd wicket partnership of 114, with Alex increasingly aggressive, and Ballinger failing to take their opportunities when catches were put up. Alex generously retired tired, allowing Jonty Cook a Chance to Shine (0 from 2 balls), and Steve Gardner the chance to show some Aussie power hitting (0 from 2 balls). Alas! The returning P Sharkey ripped through their defences, causing a complete hiatus with Ed Boakes stuffing in thigh pads, box and desperately racing against the clock to avoid being timed out! Only a gentleman's agreement saved him, in the true spirit of the game. Ed calmly stroked 17*, and we only lost 1 more wicket, with a streaky 38 from the skipper ended by another attempt to pull a half-volley resulted in the inevitable. A score of 358 felt challenging. Master Conway's spell of leg spin was outstanding, bowling at Jules and Alex when well-set he mostly kept them quiet; he will be some cricketer.
The Lee were then undone by a sumptuous feast provided by the Wards; an array of delicious home-made cakes complementing wraps, sandwiches, and fresh produce. Waddling out to field, we set attacking fields for the opening attack. The 2 Cavaliers opening for the pursuers despatched the ball to all parts; clearly they had taken notice of our approach, and after 6 overs were 54-0, after 13, 112-0 and racing away. The introduction of Guy 'Slo-mo' Morgan's enticing 'spin' slowed them initially, and then bowling hero of the weekend Gary Rice (7-for on the previous day) prised out both openers courtesy of 2 excellent catches by Alex Morgan plus a third caught by Steve Gardner. Some feeble, yet amusing, efforts to catch that elusive ball by the skipper proved no obstacle to the relentless pursuit of English wickets by the rapacious Aussie swinger Steve Gardner, who collected another excellent return of 4-41. Harry Rice executed a wonderful run out with a direct hit, having thrown his previous effort miles wide; apparently that was a ploy to lull the runners. It worked well. We almost believed him. A couple more superb catches from Ed Boakes at slip, and Steve off his own bowling, leading to a possible hat-trick, ended a brave chase by the Ballinger youngsters. In the end a comfortable victory, and the chance to marvel at James and Jonty Cook bowling in tandem towards the end meant that everyone played a part either batting or bowling. Always a pleasure to win against our closest foes, and the afternoon was rounded off by an amusing allocation of fines for misdemeanours under a cloudless sky, with full glasses rapidly emptied. Well played The Lee!
