The Lee Cricket Club U13 XI v Great Kingshill on Mon 15 Jul 2019 at 6pm
The Lee Cricket Club Lost by 1 run on last ball
Match report
What a match. The day after England's famous World Cup victory over New Zealand, the U13 team were just one run shy of creating their own super-over with the last ball of their innings.
Great Kingshill won the toss and elected to bat. Oscar bowled beautifully to remove both their openers for 6 runs in his first 2 overs. On his return to The Lee, Ollie Charlton then creamed 7 boundaries in a quick-fire unbeaten 32 before their numbers 3 and 5 took them to the 17th over before the next wicket fell - a great catch by Sam H under a sky-high ball coming straight out of the sun. At the end of their 20 overs GK had scored an above-par 126.
Sam H and Oscar took us above 50 before the first wicket fell in the 10th over, both hitting some cracking boundaries and being especially strong glancing behind the wicket. Olly and Ethan pushed the score along with good running and a few boundaries, including a huge 6 into the cow field by Olly, before Ethan fell to a good catch at midwicket. Fin strode in and hit a couple of fearsome boundaries before being run out, a fate that befell 4 of our batsmen altogether. Olly eventually fell for 26 just before we entered the last over needing 5 to win. GK had smartly kept their most accurate bowler in hand - with 2 balls left we were 8 wickets down with 3 needed. Next ball another wicket went! 2 needed to force a super-over from the last ball. A yorker, pushed to midwicket - a single scrambled - Sammy went for glory, gambling that somehow they would fumble the ball inches away from the stumps. But no, a last wicket run out, one ball short of a tie. Agony and ecstasy among both players and spectators. What a wonderful way to end the U13 season.
