Holyport 2nd XI v The Lee Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 29 Aug 2020 at 13:00
The Lee Cricket Club Lost

Match report In cricket there are some days you would just rather forget. This was one of them.
On a gloomy damp afternoon, stand in skipper Neil unfortunately lost the toss, and we were promptly inserted into bat. Under heavy cloud cover the ball was swinging wildly, whilst bouncing unpredictably. Their accurate bowling led to a steady flood of wickets, and the slow outfield meant that there wasn't a boundary off the bat until the 20th over. All credit to Guy Morgan, who almost managed to carry his bat through the entire inning, but ended up as last man out chipping one straight back to the bowler.
With a meagre total of 43 to chase, and with the pitch now dried out, their batsmen could afford to swing the bat, and we were relieved to at least last until the first hand sanitisation break (after 6 overs!) before they overhauled our total.
Onwards and upwards!

and...
On an overcast day The Lee unfortunately suffered a very narrow loss to Holyport.

Thanks to G Morgs for taking on an unusual role as opener and applying himself diligently for the team, in a cunning plan to blunt the best bowling attack in the league. And a few of us could certainly learn from him how getting in line with the ball and playing a straight bat can protect your stumps!

But the most talked about part of the day wasn’t the game but the absences of certain players who were, it was speculated, possibly trying to protect their averages rather than face the fearsome Holyport bowling line-up?

When last week’s Centurion pleaded that “he wasn’t allowed out by his wife” (!!!) a few of us looked to the skipper to take a firm disciplinarian stance…

But what did we get? Nothing but a barely-believable tale of family illness from the skipper excusing his own absence! And taken so far as to deny his own son the chance to play.

Hopefully we will see the return of these miscreants next week, with suitable jug-buying apologies, and a return to winning ways will doubtless accompany the skipper’s comeback.
