Phoenix Old Boys v The Lee Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 22 Jun 2019 at 13:00
The Lee Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
This was supposed to be an away game, but when we arrived at Barn Meadow we found that the opposition couldn't get access to the clubhouse due to a faulty lock - so we all jumped in our cars and decamped to The Lee, where fortunately there was a wicket prepared. Skipper Andy Knott won the toss and elected to bat. Mike Harris and Fraser Chapman had a solid opening partnership of 74 before Fraser missed one and was bowled for 29. Mike then had a succession of partners, with only Charlie Line (19) and Jordan Essex (17) getting into double figures. Mike notched up his century whilst batting with his son Sam at the other end. He then went on to hit out to nudge the score up to 227 before skying one of a leading edge. We ended up on 227 all out.
The Phoenix OB's openers both started well, but then some accurate bowling by Stephen Gardner and Ganesh Balan, and some fantastic catches by LJ Martin at point and Mike Harris at mid off, saw the score quickly move from 43-0 to 43-4. The middle order proved very stubborn, particularly their number 6, who went on to get an unbeaten century. A couple of wickets for Andrew Knott (including an amazing catch at full stretch by Stephen) and a couple of LBWs to Stephen meant that we had them 9 down, but their number 6 did a great job to protect their number 11, and we just couldn't grab that final wicket, and they nudged across the finishing line ahead of us.
So, for the second week in a row we have been undone by a stubborn middle order batsman. Some great individual performances (125 from Mike and 6 for 42 from Stephen, plus some great work in the field meant it was a very good game of cricket.
